As you approach this subject, Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker suggests, “Stop feeling guilty. You won’t be able to follow through with whatever good intentions you have for simplifying and de-stressing unless you get to the bottom of why you sabotage yourself time and again”. When simplifying brings fears that you might be risking disapproval, looking cheap, acting like Scrooge -- come to grips with that first (and her article here can help) and then get on with it.

Here are some ways you can simplify the giving process and some ideas for new family traditions:

• According to “MomAdvice”
o Buy four gifts for each child in the specific categories of -- something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.
o Choose your own “adventure gift” where they can select one fun family or learning experience. Art classes, dance classes, a trip to a local museum, going to a fun show in town, going to a movie with mom or dad, or another coveted outing will be on the list. This can help to cut down on the excess in your home and to create a purposeful experience with the kids.

• Here are another nine tips, according to “Frugal Momma”:
o Set a family intention for the holiday season
o Question or limit consumerism
o Be a holiday tourist
o Visit your favorite holiday traditions, or create new (and inexpensive) ones
o Gather for crafting and food
o Get outdoors
o Celebrate the winter solstice
o Say no to some activities
o Give to someone less fortunate

Enjoy!
