Discipline without Disgrace
For Children Under Five
All parents find it necessary to set limits and create boundaries for children. The question becomes how to do that without undermining a child's sense of self-confidence and worth.
Shaming children by spanking, demeaning, etc. results in children who feel resentful, resistant, recalcitrant, rigid, and revengeful. In contrast you can nurture children who are agreeable, assisting, amenable, adaptable and accountable. Instead of focusing on what your child should not do, explore with your child what it is she/he wants. Then offer choices for an acceptable way for the child to achieve the desire.
For example the parent offers, "It is not okay to have a cookie before dinner, as I want you to eat nutritious food first. But you could have a healthy carrot or a slice of apple before dinner. Which would you like?"
By offering positive choices you are setting limits without conflicting directly with the child and helping your child to begin to gather early problem-solving skills.
