STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 2, 1997 -- Consumers should be aware that only a small share of the nation's apple juice is affected by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) request to label some products with health warnings, according to Mark G. Smith, Mott's Inc. senior vice president for marketing and technical development. "Mott's apple juice products have always been pasteurized and therefore do not come under the government's suggestion for warning labels," said Smith. Pasteurization is a heat treatment that kills E. coli. The FDA last week asked manufacturers of unpasteurized juices and cider to warn consumers that the drinks could contain bacteria dangerous to children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems. Mott's received 400 calls relating to pasteurization, an unusually high number of inquiries, during the four days following the FDA announcement of its request for voluntary warning labels. "We welcome the opportunity to point out the safety and other health benefits of our products. And once we have explained the benefits of pasteurization, especially as a safeguard for children, the callers are satisfied," said Smith. Smith added that Mott's, the number-one branded apple juice products in the United States, actually experienced sales growth during a rash of E. coli cases in late 1996 that resulted from apple cider, which is rarely pasteurized. "While public concern about food safety is rising, Mott's enjoys the well-deserved confidence of the American people," said Smith. Mott's Inc., a subsidiary of London-based Cadbury Schweppes Plc (NYSE: CSG), is headquartered in Stamford, Conn. Among its other well-known brands are: Mott's Apple Sauce, Holland House, Mr. and Mrs. "T's", Clamato and Rose's. CONTACT: Joe Cullen of Mott's, 203-968-7855 |
