ATLANTA, May 10, 1999 -- Phil Hendrix got the idea for Camp
Journal during a frustrating ride home after his daughter's first
two-week stay at summer camp.
Hendrix wanted to hear all about it, but her memories were a blur. "She was exhausted and fell asleep in the car within half an hour," he recalled. "So I had several hours to think about a solution." Wouldn't it be nice if kids could capture their memorable camping experiences so they could look back on them with family and friends? A former marketing professor, Hendrix took his question to focus groups, which confirmed that kids really liked products especially tailored for camp. "A regular journal, for instance, with blank pages, isn't nearly as much fun," he learned. Enter Camp Corner, Headquarters for Summer Camp. Camp Corner's first product -- the 64-page, fill-in-the-blank Camp Journal -- makes it easy for even the youngest camper to record favorite activities, track the weather and recall foods, friends and ghost stories. Last year, Camp Journal was sold in over 500 camp and toy stores, and prompted more than 200 letters from children, parents and camp directors saying how much they enjoyed it. "The response to Camp Journal was extraordinary, so we decided to introduce other products that kids would use and enjoy at camp," said Hendrix, president of Camp Corner. This year, Camp Corner also offers the colorfully illustrated:
Camp Corner products, priced from $2.50 to $10 apiece, are sold nationwide at leading camp, toy and book stores, and over the Internet from http://www.campcorner.com. Camp Journals are also available at all Barnes & Noble stores. "Once kids get past being homesick, they love summer camp," Hendrix said. "But camp packs so much in, it's difficult for kids to remember it all. As much fun as it is, the memories fade over time. Camp Corner's goal is to make camp even better by helping kids and their families capture and preserve the experience."
