WESTPORT, Conn., June 22, 1998 -- In an effort to help consumers better understand and manage the various aspects involved with having a baby, the MetLife Consumer Education Center has created a series of three free brochures designed to help answer many of the "How Tos", "What Ifs?", and "Now Whats?" that often accompany first-time parents.

Created in conjunction with the Lamaze Institute for Family Education, the first brochure, titled "Little Miracles," is a detailed guide to the first year of a baby's development. From how to stimulate an infant, to safety tips on the use of a baby walker, this brochure offers information on a baby's growth and well-being. It also includes an offer to purchase -- at a discount -- the popular Little Miracles Video, created by the Lamaze Institute. The video features leading pediatric experts discussing many of the developmental milestones during that exciting first year.

"Becoming A Parent" covers the steps you need to take before and after baby's arrival, while sticking to a budget. It includes a detailed vaccination chart and test schedule, information on how to get a social security number for a child, and important advice on baby-proofing a home.

Designed to help parents assess child care options, "Choosing Child Care" offers information about three of the most common caregiving possibilities: family child care homes, child care centers and in-home child care. The brochure not only explains the pros and cons of each option, but provides information to help evaluate a caregivers approach to discipline and activities, health and nutrition, as well as advice about licensing, emergency procedures, and costs.

To receive these free brochures, call the MetLife Consumer Education Center, toll-free, at 800-638-5433. Made available as a public service, this information is part of the LIFE ADVICE® program, created to help people better understand and manage the major events that occur in their lives. Written in conjunction with nationally recognized authorities, each LIFE ADVICE® brochure provides a list of resources for additional information and many can be accessed on the Internet at http://www.lifeadvice.com.
