Kids live in the same world grownups do-they have to know what a modem or a hologram is, how to spell tsunami and Kwanzaa, and whether to write cyberspace and home page as one word or two.

The American Heritage® Children's Dictionary (Publication date: August 24, 1998, price $17.00, hardcover) has been completely revised to reflect the changes in the English language that are most relevant to today's kids.

More than 400 new words have been added to this edition, and, according to Senior Editor David Pritchard, a pattern did emerge from the new list.

"The trend today is clearly towards computers and high technology," he said.

Some examples of the technological words that were added to this new edition are: backup, bar code, browser, camcorder, CD-ROM, cyberspace, database, disk drive, download, e-mail, fax, home page, Internet, megabyte, modem, multimedia, online, scanner, and World Wide Web.

The list of new words added also reflects how savvy kids are about their world.

"Words such as insulin, geode, Ramadan, and millenium are new to this edition and reflect the increasing sophistication of the elementary level science curriculum as well as the greater awareness of children today about the society and culture, or cultures, around them," said Pritchard. "In the age of Dilbert, you can't have a children's dictionary that doesn't [include] cubicle."

Designed for children in grades 3-6, the American Heritage® Children's Dictionary features expanded vocabulary, all-new art, and a fresh, appealing look. Over 800 full-color photos and original illustrations enhance the precise definitions. With 14,000 main entries and over 37,000 entry words in all, this new edition is more up-to-date and offers more definitions than any dictionary in its field. Hundreds of feature notes provide intriguing information about the history and regional usage of words as well as useful tips for better spelling and vocabulary building. Also included is a special I 10-page section on phonics, making this the only children's dictionary to feature phonics in a substantive way.

About The Editors

The editors of the American Heritage® Children's Dictionary are the same people who produce the adult editions of the American Heritage Dictionary. They have a depth of lexicographical experience that is evident in the careful wording of definitions and the extensive use of sample sentences. For this new edition, the editors have also drawn from the experience of Houghton Mifflin Company's school division, which produces the best reading programs in the country and has years of experience in creating books for the educational market.
