BOSTON, June 29, 1999 -- Each year, 18 children ages 10 and
under
die, and 14,700 suffer injuries from window-related falls. An estimated
4,700 children ages 14 and under are treated in hospital emergency
departments; head injuries account for the majority of the injuries
sustained
from window falls. The majority of window fall-related deaths (70
percent)
occur during the spring and summer months.
Since 1993, Children's Hospital, Boston, and the City of Boston's Childhood Injury Prevention Program have been working together to make a safer environment for children by providing families in Boston with window guards. In 1997, the Adopt a Building campaign was launched to provide window guards to tenants of privately owned rental properties with one to four units. Injuries related to window falls have decreased by 50 percent since 1993. Children's Hospital offers these guidelines to help families make their homes safer: Children's Hospital, Boston, is the nation's premier pediatric medical center. Founded in 1869 as a 20-bed hospital for children, today it is a 300-bed comprehensive center for pediatric and adolescent health care grounded in the values of excellence in patient care and sensitivity to the complex needs and diversity of children and families. Children's Hospital is the primary pediatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, home to the world's leading pediatric research enterprise, and the largest provider of health care to the children of Boston.
