NEW YORK, May 14, 1999 -- Children can create a chemical reaction, get up-close and personal with an ant and even build their own compass all by logging onto Pfizer's new interactive science web site -- http://www.pfizerfunzone.com.

As the name reflects, the FunZone teaches science in a lively and colorful setting that appeals to children. The site's interactive games, experiments for the home and classroom and plethora of engaging scientific facts and information is designed to entertain and enlighten children and students 8-14 years old.

"Today, children are on the Internet just as much as adults, yet there is such a scarcity of sites appropriate for kids to enjoy," said Rick Luftglass, assistant director of Philanthropy for Pfizer Inc. "The FunZone allows children to learn about science with a smile on their face. It also gives parents and teachers the opportunity to explore the Internet with their children. Pfizer is proud to launch a site that we hope will serve as an inspiration for the world's future scientists."

The FunZone is sponsored by Pfizer Education Initiative (PEI), a program designed to encourage greater participation in science and math in schools across the country.

The FunZone features an array of options such as the Lab, Discoveries Section and the Time Machine. In the Lab, visitors meet actual Pfizer scientists to discover how they create medicines that cure diseases and learn about different equipment they use in research.

The Discoveries section contains online interactive activities such as an electron microscope simulation that let visitors view a variety or organisms, microbes and compounds at intense magnification. This section also features a science word game as well as fun and safe experiments that children can perform in classrooms or their own homes.

Visitors to the FunZone can step back into the past and learn about diseases and their historical impact by entering the Pfizer Time Machine. The FunZone also contains an extensive list of links to other recommended science sites for children.
