WESTPORT, Conn., July 21, 1998 -- Get out the notebooks, pencils and lunchboxes because in just a few weeks, it will be time to get your kids ready for a new school year. But don't panic. In an effort to help caregivers prepare their children for this often difficult event, the MetLife Consumer Education Center, in conjunction with nationally recognized authorities, has developed a series of free brochures that includes: Your Child's First Day At School -- Provides suggestions about ways to develop your child's interest in learning; includes a guide to help determine if you and your child are ready to start school, and offers practical advice about preparing for the big day (i.e., reading books about school -- and visiting them -- with your child prior to the first day). Your Child and Organized Sports -- Outlines the health and fitness Benefits, as well as personal and emotional awards, associated with sports participation. The brochure explains how to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle; suggests ways to help your youngster build confidence and keep a good attitude; and emphasizes the philosophies of "fair play" and sportsmanship. There is also a practical listing of "fair play" bullet points for players, parents, and coaches. Helping Your Child Understand Money -- Designed to assist parents in teaching their children about developing and practicing good money skills that will last a lifetime. The brochure helps parents understand the importance of teaching by example; assists parents in creating financial goals and budgets for their children, and gives advice about explaining where money comes from ("No, it doesn't grow on trees sweetheart"). There's also important information about implementing an allowance and teaching children how to spend and save wisely. To receive a free copy of any of the brochures, call the MetLife Consumer Education Center at 1-800-638-5433. Made available as a public service, the brochures are part of the LIFE ADVICE® program, created to help people better understand and manage the major events in their lives. All the brochures list reference sources for additional information, and the information in many LIFE ADVICE® brochures can also be accessed on the Internet at http://www.lifeadvice.com.
