WESTPORT, Conn., Jan. 19, 1998 -- Alerting children about dangerous situations continues to be an imperative and challenging part of parenting. The new online environment has made kids targets of more crime and exploitation, and the FBI continues to estimate as many as 2,300 children are reported missing each day. That's why the MetLife Consumer Education Center has developed "Protecting Your Child," a comprehensive educational brochure designed to help parents thoroughly lookout for their most precious asset -- children.

Written in conjunction with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, "Protecting Your Child" explains how parents can teach children to be wary of certain kinds of situations or behaviors without scaring them. The brochure provides communication techniques so children feel comfortable turning to parents for help if a problem arises; lists safety rules that should be taught to children as soon as they can articulate a sentence; and provides practical tips to help parents safeguard their kids.

There's also a useful section on protecting your child in cyberspace that illustrates the potential risks of unsupervised online activity, and offers advice on minimizing many of the possible online dangers.

Finally, "Protecting Your Child" explains how to prepare for a potential disappearance, provides clear and concise actions to take if a child is missing, and discusses the important role of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. There's also a list of additional references for further information.

So, help arm your child with the knowledge to make smart judgments about dangerous situations by calling the MetLife Consumer Education Center, toll-free, at 1-800-638-5433 to receive this free brochure. Made available as a public service, this information resource is part of the LIFE ADVICE(TM) program, created to help people better understand and manage the major events in their lives. The information in many of the LIFE ADVICE brochures can also be accessed on the Internet at http://www.lifeadvice.com.
