Students understand the basic components of written materials and are able to hear and manipulate the discrete sounds in words.

KINDERGARTEN:


Concepts About Print:

1.1. identify the front cover, back cover and title page of a book

1.2. follow words from left to right and top to bottom of a printed page

1.3. explain that printed materials provide information

1.4. recognize that sentences in print are made up of separate words

1.5. distinguish letters from words

1.6 . recognize and name all upper and lower-case letters

Phonemic Awareness:

1.7. distinguish and use initial consonants and the final sound in single-syllable words

1.8. distinguish long and short vowel sounds in orally stated single-syllable words

1.9. blend vowel-consonant sounds orally to make words or syllables

1.10. identify and produce rhyming words in response to spoken words

1.11. distinguish orally stated one-syllable words into shared beginning, middle or ending sounds (e.g., pit/pat; bit/bat)

1.12. track auditorily each word in a sentence, each syllable in a word and each sound in real and nonsense words

Decoding and Word Recognition:

1.13. demonstrate understanding that every spoken word consists of a sequence of basic speech sounds and a sequence of letters represents a sequence of sounds

1.14. match all consonant and short vowel sounds to appropriate letters

1.15. read simple one-syllable and high frequency (sight) words

1.16. understand that as letters of words change, so do the sounds and the meanings of the words (alphabetic principle)

Students understand the organization and contents of books, and use phonics, syllabication, and word relationships to decode and pronounce new words.

1.7. segment words into letter sounds in one to three syllable words (e.g. cat/=/c/a/t)

1.8. create and state a series of rhyming words

1.9. demonstrate the sounds made by letters and letter combinations when reading meaningful and nonsense words

1.10 use beginning and ending consonants and long- and short-vowel sounds to decode single-syllable words

1.11. use analogies to read unfamiliar words

1.12. read common, irregular sight words (e.g., the, have, said, come, give, of)

1.13. use knowledge of vowel digraphs and r-controlled letter-sound associations to read words

1.14. identify compound words and contractions

1.15. identify suffixes (e.g., s, ed, ing) and root words (e.g., look, looked, looking)

1.16. know and use common word families when reading (e.g., ite, ill, ate)

1.4. use knowledge of common diacritical markings in the dictionary

 

Students use their knowledge of word origins and word relationships as well as historical and literary context clues to determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary.

1.2. recognize the origins and meanings of frequently used foreign words in English and use these words accurately in speaking and writing

1.1. use idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes to infer meanings of words and phrases

1.2. use knowledge of Greek, Anglo-Saxon, and Latin roots to understand content area vocabulary

 

Students determine the meaning of, and use accurately. new words encountered in reading materials by applying their knowledge of American, British, and world literature.

GRADE 9: GRADE 10: GRADE 11 GRADE 12

1.1 distinguish between the denotative and connotative meanings of words and interpret the connotative power of words

1.2. apply context clues to discern word meanings, including definition , restatement, example, comparison, contrast, cause and effect


Use Word Origins & Relationships to Determine Meaning of Words:

1.1 identify and use idioms, cognates, and the literal and figurative meanings of words in speaking and writing

1.2 analyze the relationships between the origins of words and their relationship to historical events

1.3. identify and use knowledge of commonly used words and phrases from Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology to understand the meaning of new words (e.g., the word "narcissistic" drawn from the myth of Narcissus and Echo)

1.1 trace the etymology of significant terms used in political science and political history

1.2. discern the relationship of word meanings between pairs of words encountered in analogical statements (e.g., synonyms/antonyms, connotation/denotation)


Use Word Origins & Relationships to Determine Meaning of Words:

1.1. apply knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, Greek and Latin roots and affixes to draw inferences concerning the meaning of scientific and mathematical terminology

1.2. use appropriate context clues to analyze the meaning of abstract concepts and evaluate the effects of particular word and phrase choices encountered in works of fiction and non-fiction
