PENNSAUKEN, N.J., Nov. 15, 1996 -- J & J Snack Foods Corp. is recalling frozen SUPERPRETZEL(R) SOFTSTIX(R) Cheese Filled Soft Pretzel Sticks in CHEDDAR flavor because they may contain undeclared peanut butter and jelly spread. People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. Frozen Cheddar Cheese Filled SOFTSTIX(R) were distributed through retail supermarkets. The areas possibly affected include: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The product can be identified by the code number 092197 A or B embossed on the top long, sealed flap immediately above the main panel. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date, although there have been several reports of the mislabeled product. The recall was initiated after two consumer calls were received indicating the presence of peanut butter and jelly spread instead of cheddar cheese filling. Subsequent investigation revealed no more than 100 cases (1,200 individual boxes) were inadvertently packed with peanut butter and jelly spread filling. J & J representatives are in the process of removing appropriate product from store freezers. Consumers who find this product may return it to the store where it was purchased or call 1-800-989-9534, extension 1-309.
