SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17, 1996 -- Playing is an important part of a child's development, and toys can help stimulate creative play. But the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) cautions parents to select toys carefully this holiday season. Toys are responsible for thousands of eye injuries each year.

The following are AAO tips for preventing toy-related eye injuries:

  • Avoid Dangerous Toys. Do not purchase shooting toys or toys that include detachable parts that can fly into an eye. BB guns, slingshots, and water guns are just some examples. Never buy hobby kits, such as chemistry sets, for any child younger than 12 years of age.

  • Inspect for Durability. Toys for young children should not contain sharp points or edges and should be able to withstand continual impact.

  • Look at the label. Toys for children should match a child's abilities. Manufacturer instructions provide information on suggested age level for use. The symbol, ASTM, indicates that the product meets the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

  • Ensure Proper Storage. Teach children to store toys effectively when they are not in use, so children do not trip and fall over a toy.

  • Perform Routine Inspections. Maintain toys by checking them periodically for broken and/or damaged parts.
