The Buzz On Precautions Against Summer's Insects and Poisonous Plants

Poison Lookout Checklist

In its 1989 report, The Data Collection System of the AAPCC created a list of the 20 most frequently ingested plants. Not suprisingly, there is a strong correlation between the list and top sellers in the plant industry. Three of the listed plants genera, Toxicodendron, Phytolacca and Solanum are not commerically cultivated, but are extremely common in the wild.

These 20 plants are widely distributed on the continuum of toxic potential - from quite toxic to harmless - and thus show the full toxicity range of cultivated and wild plants. Interestingly, while for the most part the listed plants are from widely divergent genera, several of the listed genera, Philodendron, Dieffenbachia, Brassaia and Spathiphyllum, are from the same Arum (Araceae) family. The listed Arums, as well as many other plants from that family, tolerate the growing conditions in households well and thus are popular houseplants. Arums also frequently contain calcium oxalate raphides in substantial quantities, as do all the listed Arums.

Listed below are the AAPCC's "Top 20", common names by which these plants are known, the frequency of ingestion, active toxins (if any) and toxic effects. The title of each is the botanical name.
