The Commission urges parents not to place infants to sleep on soft bedding products, including those products intended for use by infants. Some infants placed on fluffy, plush products such as sheepskins, quilts, comforters, and pillows have been found on their stomach (the prone position) with their face, nose, and mouth covered by the soft bedding. Such soft products may cause infants to rebreathe exhaled air and suffocate. The Commission recommends that parents place infants in a crib on a firm, flat infant mattress to sleep. No soft, fluffy products-- pillows, sheepskins, quilts, comforters, toys--should be under infants while they sleep. Results of Commission studies also support the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation that healthy infants be placed on their back or side to sleep. To help prevent a suffocation death, place infant on back or side to sleep on a firm, flat crib mattress. Remove pillows, sheepskins, and toys from under baby while sleeping. |
