Why are children not mastering what they ought to be learning in school? In a natural sequel to his acclaimed Frames of Mind and The Mind's New Science, Howard Gardner turns his attention to this very question. Merging cognitive science with educational agenda. Gardner shows how ill-suited our minds and natural patterns of learning are to current educational materials, practices, and institutions, and makes an eloquent case for restructuring our schools.
"Whenever Howard Gardner focuses his synthesizing mind and vast erudition on any topic, we can be sure that an exciting intellectual adventure is in store. If his manifesto were heeded, the future of our children would benefit immensely." -Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Professor of Psychology, University of Chicago
"Were we to apply even a fraction of the knowledge Gardner marshals for us, education might finally lead to the deeper understanding that should be its primary goal." -Rexford Brown, Senior Fellow, Education Commission of the States in Educational Leadership
"Finally, a book on educational reform that makes use of everything we know about human development and cognitive science. Gardner's approach is at the same time bold and reasonable, critical and constructive, radical and responsible." -William Damon, Professor and Chairman, Education Department, Brown University
"Provides practical, well-grounded advice to school reformers who seek not rote learning but deep understanding. Extraordinarily useful and insightful in untangling the mysteries of learning and the current state of cognitive research." -Diane Ravitch, author of The Great School Wars and The Troubled Crusade
"A provocative book that sets out persuasively the complexity of learning, teaching, and schooling. This book couldn't have arrived at a better time." -Theodore R. Sizer, Professor of Education and Chairman of the Coalition of Essential Schools, Brown University
"If we closed schools today and asked ourselves how we could reinvent them to work for all youngsters, my answer would be: 'According to the ideas and models in Howard Gardner's The Unschooled Mind.' Visionary yet practical, scholarly yet accessible, this book is a stunning achievement." -Albert Shander, President, American Federation of Teachers
