Summer Fun is a complete, easy-to-read reference that offers parents step-by-step guidance for choosing the right camp for their child from among the 8,500 possibilities that exist in the United States today. Parents will learn the how to prepare campers for the experience, what to pack, how to stay in touch, and how to handle the difficulties that can sometimes arise, especially for sensitive or special needs children. From selecting the best camp to coping with homesickness, from dealing with camp cliques to camp counselors, Summer Fun combines expert advice with practical tips on everything a parent needs to know before, during, and after their child's stay at camp.
This guide to children's camping is a great way to start when you are considering your child's summer plans. It covers camping basics, day and overnight camps, specialty camps, and teen tours. Basic camping covers topics such as where to look for a camp, what to look for in considering a camp, how to decide if it's the right camp for your child, when your child is ready, several checklists, what to pack, and what to do while your child is at camp. Specialty camps discussions are targeted for kids who are personally involved in a particular sport, education theme, art and music and how that type of camp can benefit them. Teen tours are generally described for those who are ready to travel (by virtue of age and maturity) daily in a group for extended amounts of time away from home.
The author also discusses some of the concerns that parents have for camping experiences such as relevant ages for the different types of camp, what to do when a child wants to come home early, how to approach problems at camp, how is the child to be prepared emotionally for the different situations that can occur at camp and how to teach your child some of the self-care tasks that will be required of him or her (i.e. know the difference between handling wet clothes and soiled clothes.)
This book is a well-written guide to keep and refer to as your children grow-up and extend their camping adventures. It is so useful, you may find that your friends want to borrow your copy, as did mine! My only regret is that the book doesn't include a listing of all the US camps, but those are available both online and in youth organization references available at libraries.
