KidSource OnLine Book Review

After I read the sequel to this book Brian's Winter, I rushed out to get the first book of the story, Hatchet. The story opens with Brian and his internal struggle to understand his parent's divorce and a secret about it that he holds deep inside. He is being sent to see his father in the mountains of Northern Canada and manages to survive a small plane crash after the pilot suffers a heart attack.

Brian, city-raised and emotionally bruised, finds he is unprepared to face the wilderness alone. His one life saving tool is a hatchet which was a parting gift for his journey. It is a boy's journey of self-reliance and personal growth set against the Canadian wilderness that makes this story so intriguing. (This would be a good choice for a long car trip.)

A Note of Caution: the publisher suggests this story for children ages 9-12 and I wanted to add it NOT recommended for younger children due to the details of the plane crash text.

From the Back Cover

On his way to visit his recently divorced father in the Canadian mountains, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is the only survivor when the single-engine plane crashes. His body battered, his clothes in shreds, Brian must now stay alive in the Canadian wilderness.

More than a survival story, Hatchet is a tale of tough decisions. When all is stripped down to the barest essentials, Brians discovers some stark and simple truths: Self-pity doesn't work. Despair doesn't work. And if Brian is to survive physically as well as mentally, he must discover courage.
