Description

In Paulsen's Newbery Honor-winning novel Hatchet, 13-year-old Brian struggles to survive alone in the Canadian wilderness. Brian's Winter begins where Hatchet left off--and answers the often-asked question--what if Brian had not been rescued at the end of summer, but had to face a winter alone?

KidSource OnLine Book Review

I picked up this book in audio cassette format in the children's section one day while my son was browsing. I hadn't read the precursor book, Hatchet so I didn't really know what to expect. I was riveted. The story brought a 13 year old's struggle to survive against the background of a winter in the Canadian wilderness vividly to my mind.

The story opens at the end of summer, after Brian has made some adjustments to wilderness living and has also recovered the survival kit from the submerged plane. The survival pack only delays the inevitable: that fall and winter are coming and he must prepare. He finds resources within himself, from his surroundings and from some unexpected allies, including a bullying skunk! A tale of courage, perfect for a long car trip.

A Note of Caution: the publisher suggests this story for young adults and I wanted to add it is NOT recommended for young children due to the details of the hunting text.

From the Back Cover

In Hatchet, Brian, the sole survivor of a plane crash, learns to rely on his intelligence, his instincts and his hatchet to cling to life. And, Brian's perseverance pays off - he is rescued at the end of summer.

But what would have happened if Brian hadn't been rescued then? What if Brian had been left to confront the most dangerous thing he had faced since the plane crash, his deadliest enemy - winter?

Gary Paulsen raises the stakes for survival in this riveting and inspiring story of one boy who faces the ultimate test and the ultimate adventure.
