About STOP
S.T.O.P. -- Safe Tables Our Priority is a non-profit grassroots
organization
devoted to victim assistance, public education, and policy advocacy for
safe
food and public health. The organization was founded in 1993 by family and
friends of people who became ill or died from exposure to E. coli 0157:H7
and
other pathogenic bacteria in meat and poultry. Each year, contaminated
meat
and poultry cause millions of illnesses and thousands of deaths in the
United
States. Although no one is safe, those with weakened immune systems,
particularly children and the elderly, are most vulnerable to death or
permanent
disability. S.T.O.P.'s mission is to prevent unnecessary illness and loss
of life
from foodborne contamination. Our program is designed to meet this goal
through three strategic objectives:
- To provide information and improve services for victims of illness
caused by
contaminated meat and poultry. S.T.O.P. provides information and support
to
victims and their families through our hotline (800-350-STOP) and
information
clearinghouse, and works to promote proper diagnostic and treatment
practices
with the medical community.
- To prevent foodborne illness through consumer education. Through public
education and media campaigns, S.T.O.P. seeks to empower consumers with
the information they need to protect themselves.
- To reform the animal husbandry, slaughter, processing and handling
practices and policies that lead to pathogenic contamination and
infection.
S.T.O.P.'s grassroots advocacy brings a powerful voice for consumers to
debates on food safety policy and regulatory reform at the local and
national
levels, and to efforts to modernize the outdated federal system for meat
and
poultry inspection.
