Description

The first book of its kind, "Wanting a Child" is a collection of personal essays written by literary authors about their difficult, sometimes heartbreaking but ultimately mostly successful quests for parenthood.

KidSource OnLine Book Review

Originally, I picked up this book because I thought it might capture the longing that one feels when considering parenthood. It did that and much more. In it's twenty two stories, it captures the essence of why we want to have children in our lives whether it is our spiritual beliefs, life values or emotional longings.

This book allows one to look inside the grieving hearts of writers who have had miscarriages, experienced IVF treatments, endured the loss of a child, hopefully engaged a surrogate mother, had a child born with a chronic illness or suffered the rejection of a stepchild. These things may have happened to someone you may know, and perhaps you may have wondered what it was to "walk a mile in their shoes." This book will help provide understanding to friends and families of those who have lived through these experiences by it's frank, brave narrative written by both men and women. For those going through these times, it will help you by letting you know how others have made the journey.

While some stories end with a loss, a majority of the stories end happily with a child's arrival. The writers become parents with gratitude, grace and an appreciation for the great fragileness of life.

From the Back Cover

With humor, couraage, pain and joy, the writers in this collection of personal essays and fiction share the same dream-the wish for a child. Here they reveal their complicated but mostly successful journey, whether they involve surrogacy, in vitro fertilization, pregnancy after multiple miscarriages, or adoption. Also included are inspiring accounts of families that defy the traditional definition, from homes with same-sex partners to those with single parents or stepparents. The first book of its kind, Wanting a Child, gives voice to the heatbreak, hope, and elation experience by the many who discover that pregnancy and parenthood cannot be taken for granted.
