KidSource OnLine Book Review

This is an excellent book for parents of infants with Down Syndrome as well as the professionals that work with them. It includes basic information on care and medical concerns as well as over 100 pages of teaching activities that cover all areas of development. There is also a section on developmental milestones that can help in understanding the typical sequence of development. The back of the book includes a glossary of terms, a list of additional resources, and a section in which you can record your child's growth and development.

My favorite chapter is the "Teaching Activities" chapter. The activities are understandable and can easily fit into your busy schedule. The activities are broken down into very small steps so that progress can be easily measured. I feel this book is an excellent choice for any new parent of a child with Down Syndrome. I also highly recommend it for professionals that work with young children with Down Syndrome.

From the Preface

This book was written for you, the parents of an infant with Down syndrome. The information presented here was gathered from years of experience in working with babies with Down syndrome and their families. The first edition of this book, called Teaching your Down's Syndrome Infant: A Guide for Parents, was published in 1977. It outlined teaching activities developed by professionals and parents like yourself who worked together as part of a university research project. Many parents throughout the world have used the activities since and have found them helpful and successful for teaching young children with Down syndrome. These activities have been refined over the years and new ones added as we have learned more about how best to enhance the development of babies with Down syndrome. This new, revised edition provides the latest information on teaching activities for infants, resources for parents, medical facts about Down syndrome, and tips for parents on how best to help and enjoy their babies.
