Professionals, families, and students can rely on this fully illustrated, comprehensive resource for all of their disability reference needs. Along with extensive coverage of genetics, heredity, pre- and postnatal development, specific disabilities, family roles, and intervention, this edition features new chapters on substance abuse, AIDS, Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, behavior management, transitions to adulthood, and health care in the 21st century. It also reveals the causes of many conditions that can lead to developmental disabilities. The convenient selection of appendices includes a new one that describes the properties and uses of a wide variety of medications.
This is an excellent reference book for both parents and professionals. The book is presented in a readable and caring manner. The first part of the book covers information on heredity and fetal development. It includes descriptions of prenatal diagnostic procedures. It also includes a chapter on prematurity. The second part of this book describes the various organ systems in the body. It includes how they work as well as what can go wrong. The third part of the book covers information on many different disabilities, including: Mental retardation, visual impairments, hearing, speech and language problems, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. The last section of the book focuses on the financial and emotional difficulties associated with raising a child with a disability. The appendix includes a glossary of medical terms, a description a many syndromes, resources for children with disabilities, and a description of life-saving techniques.
One of the most helpful chapters for me was titled "Caring and Coping". This chapter helped me understand the impact on the family. It included sections on the effects on parents, siblings, grandparents and the child with the disability.
This book was used as a textbook in one of my graduate courses. I really enjoyed the text as well as the course.
