KidSource OnLine Book Review

This is an excellent book on teaching language skills to children with special needs. This book teaches you how to use toys to help increase your child's language skills. The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals primarily with information on language development, causes of language delays, and how play can be used to improve language development. The second part recommends specific toys along with activities that can be used to stimulate language. There is also a list of recommended children's books. The activities are sequenced by developmental ages from birth to 60 months. There are charts at the end of each developmental level to help you keep track of your child's progress. The book concludes with a chapter on toy safety, a listing of toy manufacturers, a materials list, and a resource guide for information on a variety of special needs.

My favorite chapter is chapter 4, "Teaching Language Throughout the Day". This chapter describes how language activities can be incorporated into everyday activities, such as washing dishes, cooking, vacuuming, etc.
